ABOUT NÜSHU

Nüshu is a unique writing system that developed among women in Jiangyong, Hunan, China. Traditionally used in letters, songs, fans, embroidered textiles, and sanchaoshu (“third-day books”), it offered women a way to record personal experiences, express emotions, and maintain bonds of friendship and sisterhood. Recognizable by its slender, elongated characters, Nüshu carries stories of marriage, family, separation, grief, companionship, and everyday life. This project reimagines that tradition through digital interaction, transforming the viewer’s words into Nüshu characters that flow from the eyes like tears, turning private emotion into visible language.
